Galen's name Γαληνός, Galēnos (Greek) comes from the adjective γαληνός, “calm”. The spelling of the name as Claudius Galenus (lat.Claudius Galenus) appears only in the Renaissance. The scientist-doctor created about 400 works on philosophy, medicine and pharmacology, of which about a hundred have come down to us. He collected and classified the information on medicine, pharmacy, anatomy, physiology and pharmacology, accumulated by ancient science. From his books, doctors studied at universities in Europe until the 19th century.
