Roberto Bellarmino (1542–1621) - leader of the Italian Catholic Church, saint, church teacher, theologian, preacher, teacher. Member of the Jesuit Order. From 1595 - provincial of the Jesuit order in Naples, from 1599 - cardinal, from 1602 - archbishop of Capua. Member of the Holy Chamber of the World Inquisition, took part in the trials of G. Bruno, Galileo, T. Campanello. He prepared a new edition of the Vulgate (the standard Latin translation of the Bible). Known aliases: Torti, Matteo; Tortus, Matthaeus.
