The author — Gerhard Johann Voss, or Vossius (1577–1649) — was a prominent Dutch theologian, linguist, historian, and humanist. The book was published in 1656 in Amsterdam by the celebrated Dutch publishing house of the Elzevirs, which operated from the late sixteenth to the early eighteenth century. It was founded by Lodewijk Elzevier (1546–1617) in Leiden, with branches later established in The Hague, Utrecht, and Amsterdam. Elzevier editions were renowned for their high quality of printing, clean and elegant typefaces, and the simplicity and refinement of their design. The firm published works by classical authors, scholarly treatises, literary works, textbooks, and more. Scholars and writers of the day considered it an honor to have their work taken on by the house. In just over a century, the publisher printed more than 2,200 books and approximately 3,000 dissertations. The Elzevirs used several printer's marks. In this particular volume, the title page bears the printer's mark of Minerva.
