"Description of European Sarmatia" (Sarmatiae Europeae descriptio) - a monument of historiography of the XVI century, written by an Italian nobleman A. Gvanyini. From the 1550s he served as a captain in the army of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, participated in the Northern Seven Years War. In 1571 he accepted the citizenship of the Commonwealth, for 14 years (according to other sources – 18) was the military commander of Viciebsk. Gvagnini spoke several languages, which was reflected in his writings. The Description is written in Latin in the first half of the 1570s. It describes the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Russian state, Poland, Livonia and other regions. The basis of the book is a manuscript by Matei Stryikovsky, which Alexander Gvagnini took to read and did not return it. The book was published in 1578 in Krakow under the name of Gvagnini, and received great resonance in Europe
