Annotation

Michael Underwood (1736–1820) was a man-midwife of London. He was a house pupil at St. George’s Hospital for several years under the supervision of the King George II’s surgeon Sir Caesar Hawkins. After study in Paris, he established a practice in Cavendish Square, specializing in obstetrics. In 1784, he published “A Treatise on the Diseases of Children”. The book contains several original descriptions of childhood diseases.The book brought him fame, and went through 10 editions in the next 60 years. It was also published in France, Germany, and America.
