The statutes of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in 1588 can rightly be attributed to the outstanding monuments of the legal, literary and linguistic culture of the Belarusians. This set of laws of feudal law, a kind of constitution, which had no equal even in the highly developed countries of Western Europe. The Statute was developed and prepared at a high theoretical and professional level under the authority of the highest dignitaries of the state, Belarusians by origin, Chancellor Ostaf Volovich and sub-Chancellor Lev Sapega.
